Temperatures are starting to get a little cooler where we live, and signs of fall are definitely creeping in. Leaves are turning, mornings are getting cooler, and the lawn is lasting longer and longer between mowing, which is definitely a perk. So as we start to take out those jeans and layering tops of choice, I always like to look around and see what will be big this season style-wise, so I can choose what to add to my wardrobe to make me feel up-to-date for fall.
Burgundy
Color-wise, burgundy will be around in a big way this year. It’s always a great option for fall, especially for people who don’t look their best in orange or other colors we tend to think of naturally in the autumn (that’s me, hi!). So it’s a great time to stock up if that’s also you. If traditional autumn colors are your thing, burgundy goes well with them. So try it out and see what you like. Other colors for this season are deep chocolate browns and greens – especially olive and forest green, and the three make a combination that works very well for fall. You can try one or try them all, the point is to have fun with it. I’ve even seen burgundy foliage used in home décor, and it looks fantastic! This is the trend I’m most excited to try this year.
Leopard
While we will always have leopard, some years it’s more prominent than others. This is one of those years. Last time it was everywhere, my daughter wore it head to toe and felt so stylish. Of course she was 4. The things you can get away with in preschool! For those of us a little beyond those years and maybe not here for the full-on leopard look, adding in some of the print is a great way to look current, whether it be in a whole garment like a top or pants, or adding just a touch, like in shoes or accessories.
Western & English Country
I’m combining two trends into one here, so take your pick – or pick both! They are Western and English Country. I’m not suggesting wearing full riding attire or cowboy outfits, but adding touches of these styles to your regular wardrobe is a good way to bring them in. These include fringe, plaid, quilted vests, turquoise, etc. I’ve even seen southwestern prints, which I just love, having grown up in New Mexico. Blazers are still going strong, and are a good way to bring in English country vibes.
Denim jackets are always fashionable and go with so much. Of course we can’t forget about the shoes! That’s probably the most important accessory in each of these looks. That’s right, tall riding boots are back, and cowboy-inspired boots are still here and getting taller. Tall boots of course mean skinnier jeans. I know wider leg jeans have made a comeback and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon, but those skinnies are back for this season. In fact, this year is a great time to embrace a variety of styles of jeans.
Denim
Speaking of jeans, this is the season for denim, and not just for jeans anymore! You can try out denim as tops, skirts, dresses, and even wear denim on denim. Think blue jeans and a chambray shirt. You can match the shades or contrast them. I have a lighter chambray shirt, so I plan to try it with both light wash and dark wash jeans. If that much blue denim in the same outfit is a little intimidating, denim comes in plenty of other colors, especially right now.
Accessories
This is the season to have fun with accessories! Layer up those necklaces, mix those metals, and add in those chunky pieces. People are even adding accessories to their bags. I love this. It reminds me of when we used to attach keychains and buttons to our backpacks to personalize them in high school, but now it’s been reimagined in an adult way. You can buy purses that already have charms on them, but I think it’s more fun to choose your own that have meaning to you. You can buy charms made specifically for purses, but fun keychains work well too.
I love the look of layered necklaces. It’s important to make sure the lengths are different enough so they don’t overlap. Layering up bracelets and stacking those rings works too. When accessorizing, don’t forget about the hair. Claw clips are still going strong, and are just as awesome as they were in the 90s, but now come in more variety. They come with more shaping and detailing, and in metal as well as plastic. Other types of metal hair accessories are around this season, too. You can also weave in a scarf to add interest to a hairstyle.
I hope this roundup of trends for Fall 2024 has been useful to you. This is, of course, not an exhaustive list. You may have noticed other things as well. I like to use trends for inspiration rather than rules to stick to. Wear whatever makes you feel beautiful. That’s the most important thing. That said, having inspiration makes it easier to know where to start. So I encourage you to take a look at what you see out there and pay particular attention to what is speaking to you.
